It is important for surrogacy to get a fair and balanced representation in the media. Too often it is portrayed, especially in serial dramas, as controversial and exploitative. This couldn't be further from the truth. Surrogacy in the UK is a legally recognised way to start a family. It is extremely rare for there to be any kind of contention with UK based surrogacy, but all too often the media portrays surrogacy in a negative light to attract better headlines.
It is encouraging therefore for the BBC to have shown surrogacy on BBC News on 22nd September in a positive light and with a balanced opinion piece. Bit by bit, each media outlet is starting to realise that what is portrayed in the media is not only untrue, but it is harmful for those thousands of families involved in surrogacy.
